Favourite Places: Cornuti

Johannesburg is known as the city of gold, it's all about fast living, big money and flashy lifestyles. So I was pleasantly surprised to discover Cornuti in Illovo. It is a cosy Italian gem that draws you in from the moment you walk through the door.

It has everything you imagine an Italian eatery should have, from the classic chalkboard menus the delightful smell of fresh baking pizza to the gregarious and friendly staff. But don't expect outdated decor from a bygone era, an eclectic chic combination of marble topped tables, gorgeous lighting and interesting artwork hint at the eatery's 28 year history but keep it firmly planted in 2016.

What truly makes Cornuti my favorite place though is the authentic Italian food. Classic food done well is great, classic food with a twist done brilliantly is even better. Their menu features the classics you know and love but also delightfully creative confections. My personal favorite is the Tre Colori pizza - which I think should be renamed the Millionaire's pizza - it is a heavenly combination of smoked salmon, spring onion, sour cream and caviar.

Whether you want to impress on a date or just want to grab a great pizza with mates Cornuti is the place to go.
