Favourite Places: Pot Luck Club

We are pretty sure by now everyone has heard of the award-winning restaurant in Cape Town, the Potluck Club. So after months of waiting we were very excited that the day had finally arrived for us to try this place out.

The Potluck Club is known as not your average dining experience, and it definitely lived up to its reputation. The actual restaurant is set high above the Old Biscuit Mill on the top floor, and boasts a 360 view of Woodstock. The restaurant has a minimalist aesthetic with the kitchen in full view of the diners. It is clear this place is all abut the food.

The menu is based on the five flavours all foods are composed of, salty, sweet, sour, bitter, and umami. Naturally we had to try everything. Although there was nothing on the menu we disliked there were definitely a few stand out favourites.

The ceviche, which is a fish dish that uses the acid in citrus juice to cook the fish and no heat was beautifully delicate and balanced and did not over power the fresh tuna which was the fish of the day.

The Potluck fish sliders, crispy battered fish sandwiched between a steamed bun (which in our opinion should be declared the mandatory bun for burgers) was flawless in every conceivable way and definitely met the definition of a perfect bite.

Although both of us are in the most serious way devout chocoholics, it was this almost deconstructed version of the well-known lemon meringue pie that won our hearts. Consisting of frozen cheesecake, lemon custard and beurre noisette crumb, but don’t get us wrong; their chocolate fondant soufflé is also to die for.

Of course no dining experience is complete without those who serve you, and as we are well aware, service can make or break a restaurant. We have to say that from start to finish the service was anything you would expect from a Michelin star establishment. The waiters are knowledgeable and attentive overseen by a manager who is more concerned with good service than his title as manager and will gladly fill your glass if that is what is needed of him. The kitchen is run with military precision and there is clearly order behind what seems like a whirlwind of dishes flying out of the kitchen with an impressive speed.

We think it goes without saying that the Potluck Club is definitely a restaurant that should be put on your food bucket list.
